On November 11, at 2:00 p.m., Dr. Alessandra Rigonato will present the lecture “Poéticas do teatro da Irlanda do Norte". The theater in Northern Ireland has a strong tendency to depict the armed conflicts during the Troubles period (1968-1998) in different poetics. Tragedy and comedy intercalate and intertwine in telling the story of Ulster. The aim of this talk is to look at some of these poetic approaches and ask: How long will Northern Ireland playwrights continue to draw inspiration from the historical drama of the Troubles?

Alessandra Rigonato is a Professor at the University of Northern Tocantins (UFNT), Araguaína campus. She holds a PhD (2020) and an MA (2015) in English Language and Literature from the University of São Paulo (USP), where she developed research on Irish drama and the reception of classical Greek theatre. She also holds a BA in Portuguese/Greek Studies from USP (2024) and a teaching degree in English Language from Faculdade de Educação Paulistana (2021). She is a researcher affiliated with the William Butler Yeats Chair at USP (FFLCH) and a member of the Brazilian Association of Irish Studies (ABEI). Her academic work focuses on Irish literature, drama, and the teaching of literature in English, with a special interest in the intersections between theatre, memory, and cultural translation.

The event Encontro com os Estudos Irlandeses is an initiative of the W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies, aiming to promote discussions on contemporary topics in the field of Irish Studies based on the research conducted by graduate students from the Graduate Program in English Language and Literary Studies (FFLCH/USP).
